ABOUT EMDR
trauma therapy

What is emdr?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a psychotherapy that enables people to heal from the symptoms of emotional distress resulting from disturbing life experiences. Repeated studies show that EMDR therapy enables people to receive the benefits of psychotherapy that once took years to make a difference.

HOW DOES emdr WORK?

EMDR uses eye movement or other bilateral stimulations to process disturbing memories and feelings to successfully resolve painful experiences.

EMDR addresses the natural stress responses of fight, flight or freeze instincts. When distress from a disturbing event remains unresolved, the upsetting images, thoughts, and emotions may create an overwhelming feeling of being back in that moment or of being “frozen in time”. EMDR helps the brain process these memories and allows for complete healing. While the original experience is still remembered, the negative emotional and physical responses from the event are eliminated.

HOW DOES emdr Differ from Traditional talk therapy?

Unlike talk therapy, the insights clients gain in EMDR therapy results are not based on a clinician’s interpretation. Instead, the client’s insights accelerate their own intellectual and emotional processing – a natural outcome of the EMDR therapeutic protocol. As a result, each client’s thoughts, feelings, and behavior are positively transformed.

Is emdr a recognized therapy?

EMDR therapy is well researched and recognized as an effective form of treatment for trauma and other disturbing experiences by the American Psychiatric Association, the World Health Organization, and the Department of Defense.

To date, millions of people have been successfully treated around the world with EMDR for the past 30 years.
